Unrelenting Heatwave

India
Maharashtra is experiencing a heat wave and Pune is no exception with the mercury levels touching an UNPRECEDENTED 42.1 degrees for this season on Thursday. This was THE THIRD HIGHEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED by the Met department in the city for April, the highest instance being 43.3 degrees on April 30, 1897. There will be no reprieve for the citizens in the coming days with the met officers forecasting a steady rise in temperature. The heat wave can be attributed to the northerly winds which were responsible for hot dry air advection. On Wednesday, Akola recorded 45.3 degrees, the highest in the country, followed by Nagpur recording 44.6 degrees. On Thursday, the state saw most of the districts record temperatures above 40 degrees

India Lakes Drying Up Fast

India
After heat wave, it’s water scare - Lakes drying up fast. If the scorching summer was not bad enough, Jharkhand is now on the threshold of an acute water crisis with authorities detecting a 30cm depletion over last year’s findings of the groundwater table this year. As a result, there has been a remarkable decrease of water level in three reservoirs around the state capital, one of them — Rukka Dam — witnessing a decrease of six feet over the corresponding period last year. In April last year the water level of Rukka revolved around 17ft. This year it is at less than 11ft. "Moreover, pre-monsoon groundwater level is also constantly declining as mining of groundwater through deep-borings has increased manifold.” The condition is the same with Gonda dam in the posh Kanke area, where many multi-storeyed buildings have been constructed in the past five years. “If water level decreases at this pace, supply has to be stopped within the next 15 days."

Adelaide heatwave 'one in 3,000 years'

Breaking Earth News
Australia
Adelaide's 15-day heatwave was A ONCE IN 3,000 YEAR OCCURRENCE, an atmospheric scientist says. "The odds are about the same as tossing 12 coins and getting all heads or all tails." "This heat wave is close to being off the scale." Nuriootpa, in the Barossa Valley, recorded 13 days over 35 degrees - a ONE IN 1,000 YEAR EVENT, while Loxton in the state's Riverland had 15 days over 35 degrees which was a ONE IN 200 YEAR EVENT. Adelaide's 15-day heatwave surpassed the previous capital city heatwave record of Perth, which experienced 10 days over 35 degrees in February 1988. The all-time national heatwave record was set in Marble Bar in northern Western Australia, which had 160 consecutive days at or above 37.8 degrees celsius (or 100 degrees fahrenheit) in the summer of 1923-24.

AUSTRALIA - The record-breaking heatwave across south-eastern Australia is predicted to ease today, but farmers are already counting the cost in the millions of dollars. Temperatures in Adelaide hit 40.5 degrees yesterday, the 15th straight day they have soared above 35 degrees. The heat has had a devastating effect on South Australia's farming sector and raised serious doubts about the sustainability of irrigation in the lower Murray River. Apple and pear growers have suffered severe damage from heat and wind. "Most crops, like soft vegetables, can tolerate three or four days of extreme temperatures, but that's about the limit." The situation is at its most severe in the final reaches of the Murray River, including Lake Alexandrina, where water levels are so low even farmers with irrigation rights are finding their pumps left high and dry. Wine grape yields have fallen by half or more in just a week. Melbourne has a chance to break the 68-year-old record for its hottest March. The city is averaging 30.7 degrees for the month, and the record is 28.9 degrees. "It's a tough record to break, and the fact that we're in a position to possibly break it is an indication of an exceptional month." Image Above: Water levels are so low near the Murray mouth, and salinity levels so high, that most irrigators cannot use it, and are buying water from elsewhere.

The Record Breaking Heatwave in Southern Australia

Australia
S. Australia faces more serious outbreaks of fire after a 13-day heatwave which is expected to continue until Tuesday. Hot weather has contributed to difficult firefighting conditions, including a 150-hectare blaze at Willunga in Adelaide's south, which gutted a house and left nine firefighters suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Ade
laide's forecast maximum of 40 degrees Friday was the 12th consecutive day of temperatures above 35 degrees - the LONGEST HEATWAVE EVER in any Australian capital city. South Australia could expect deteriorating conditions if the weather plays havoc, and therefore fanning potential fires. "This is a VERY UNUSUAL WEATHER PATTERN for South Australia...with one or two days of extreme weather, then the change come through which makes it worse for a short while. Then the weather moderates, so you get day after day of that."

Experts say this kind of heat is a RARE weather event
for this time of year. 'We've only ever had eight 40s before in March in over 140 years of records." Heatwave Record

Fire bans are in force
across parts of four states as heatwave conditions continue across South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and southern New South
Wales.

Summer has just arrived in Bathurst – about three months late. After February, traditionally one of the hottest months of the year passed with only one daytime maximum temperature rising above 30 degrees Celsius, the third week of March is about to deliver a summer they never really had. After temperatures soared nearly five degrees above average to 32C on Tuesday, the Bureau of Meterology has predicted four straight days of hotter than average weather in the region. The run of hotter than normal days this month is ranging nearly 3C above the average 27.3C maximum for March and, this week at least, three days will be within three or four degrees of the record high of 35.3C for the month recorded on March 13, 1998. Bathurst’s minimum temperatures have also been running higher than average.

Heatwave may kill thousands by 2017

Great Britain
Bleak outlook for the UK
There is a 25% chance that a severe heatwave will strike England and kill more than 6000 people before 2017 if no action is taken to deal with the health effects of climate change. More than 3000 people could die in an intense summer hot spell in southeast England, with just as many more dying from heat related deaths over the summer. Until 2012, when London stages the summer Olympic Games, the odds of thousands dying in summer heat each year will be one in 40, and thousands more could die each year as a result of other effects of global warming and air pollution.

Perth set to sizzle during record heatwave

Breaking Earth News
Australia
Perth looks set to have its longest heatwave in 20 years. Residents are set to swelter with nine days straight of temperatures in the mid to late 30s. Perth temperatures have reached 35C or higher since Sunday and weather experts say there is no reprieve in sight. The record was 10 days in 1975. A strong high system and the low pressure system threatening to turn into a cyclone in the Kimberley region are blamed for the scorching temperatures. The combination of the two systems was pushing a lot of hot, dry air from inland Australia across the continent and into metropolitan Perth. “Basically it’s becoming a little bit more heated every day as we go along and we are likely to be some of the hottest temperatures in Australia over the next few days.” January saw above average temperatures in Perth, with February on target to be a similar story. Power consumption hit RECORD LEVELS on Monday. It was THE MOST ELECTRICITY USED IN THE NETWORK AT ANY ONE POINT IN TIME EVER.

The Northern Territory outback town of Tennant Creek has had its longest heatwave on record, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees for the 19th day in a row.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the mercury reached 41.2 degrees just after 3pm yesterday afternoon.

The bureau's climate services manager Sam Cleland says Tennant Creek has also had its second-longest summer dry period.

Perth turns up the heat for Christmas

Australia

As the eastern states are pummelled by raging storms and flash floods, Perth is set to swelter through a Christmas-week heatwave. And the rest of summer is expected to be warmer than usual. January to March is expected to make up for the late onset of warmer weather this year. There is more than a 50 per cent chance that this summer will exceed the average median temperature. Perth had endured seven days above 40C in 2007, compared to the average of three days a year. If the temperature again exceeds 40C in the next week, this year will set the record for the most number of very hot days. This heatwave follows several weeks of UNUSUALLY cool weather. In fact, Perth is set to record only its 10th year, since records began in 1897, in which November has been warmer than December. The average temperature so far this month was 24.9C, compared with the December average of 28.8C. November this year was Perth's WARMEST AND SUNNIEST ON RECORD, due primarily to an absence of cold fronts. The average maximum was 28.5C, compared with the historical average of 26.2C. Perth's sunshine stands in stark contrast to the wild weather ravaging Australia's eastern seaboard.

SANTIAGO BROILED BY HEAT WAVE

Chile, S.A.
(11/20)Tuesday’s peak temperature of 34 degrees Celsius (93.2 degrees Fahrenheit) fell just short of Monday’s high of 34.8 degrees Celsius (94.6 degrees Farenheit), the hottest temperature recorded in Santiago so far this month and ONE OF THE HOTTEST TEMPERATURES REGISTERED IN NOVEMBER IN RECENT HISTORY. The heat wave has not been limited to Santiago: Cities across Chile’s central zone reported high temperatures on Monday, and two forest fires were sparked in the Valparaíso region. Experts at Chile’s Meteorological Office attribute the heat to La Niña, a phenomenon characterized by abnormally low water temperatures in large expanses of the Pacific Ocean between the coasts of South America and Oceania. The phenomenon, usually limited to the winter months, has exhibited anomalous behavior this year by peaking in the spring and summer. The projected result is extreme summer heat in Chile’s Central Valley, including temperatures that may surpass Santiago’s highest-ever recorded temperature of 37.2 degrees Celsius (nearly 99 degrees Fahrenheit), registered in 1915.
